This Just In: Sugary Drinks Can Be Deadly

If you’re still struggling with a soda habit, this new research might be just what you need to abstain from the sweet stuff: About 180,000 deaths around the world may be associated with sugar-sweetened beverages each year, according to a new study presented today at the American Heart Association’s spring meeting in New Orleans. In fact, about 25,000 U.S. deaths were linked to the consumption of sugary drinks in 2010 alone.

To come to this conclusion, researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health looked at the amount of sugary drinks being consumed worldwide, as well as the number of deaths related to obesity and diabetes (two proven long-term effects of consuming too much sugar and too many calories). Based on previous research, they knew how the consumption of these beverages would factor into a person’s risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers. From there, they were able to determine how many of those deaths were likely caused by sugar-laden drinks. And they weren’t just looking at something you buy in a Big Gulp cup—sugar-sweetened beverages include sports drinks and fruit juices, as well as sodas.

“When you drink a sugary beverage, you’re consuming a large number of calories, but it doesn’t make you feel full and it doesn’t have a lot of other nutritional value,” says study co-author Gitanjali Singh, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health. Plus, all that sugar can disrupt your body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels. The result is a lethal combination: Not only are you packing on extra pounds, but you’re also screwing with your blood sugar, which can set you up for diabetes.

The American Health Association recommends cutting yourself off after you’ve consumed 450 calories from sugar-sweetened beverages each week. “Ideally, it would be better to limit consumption as much as possible,” says Singh.

Attacks Your Liver Just Like Alcohol

Sugar is Both a Fat and a Carb, and this Combo Drives World-Wide Obesity-Related Disease Rates

Sugar is the only calorie source that correlates with the increase in diabetes. In 1985, when the world-wide sugar consumption was 98 million tons, diabetes affected 30 million people. By 2010, sugar consumption had risen to 160 million tons, and global diabetes prevalence reached 346 million people. Overall, sugar is 50 times more potent than calories, in terms of causing diabetes. But why does it have this extraordinarily potent effect?

The answer lies in its unique structure. As just mentioned, it metabolizes as both fat and carbohydrate, and the reason for this is because it contains both glucose and fructose. These two sugars are not interchangeable, and your body processes each of them differently.

Sucrose (table sugar) is 50 percent glucose and 50 percent fructose. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is anywhere from 42 to 55 percent fructose depending on which type is used. Glucose is the form of energy your body is designed to run on. Every cell in your body uses glucose for energy, and it’s metabolized in every organ of your body; about 20 percent of glucose is metabolized in your liver. Fructose, on the other hand, can only be metabolized by your liver, because your liver is the only organ that has the transporter for it.

Since all fructose gets shuttled to your liver, and, if you eat a typical Western-style diet, you consume high amounts of it, fructose ends up taxing and damaging your liver in the same way alcohol and other toxins do. In fact, fructose is virtually identical to alcohol with regards to the metabolic havoc it wreaks. According to Dr. Lustig, fructose is a “chronic, dose-dependent liver toxin.” And just like alcohol, fructose is metabolized directly into fat—not cellular energy, like glucose. So eating fructose is really like eating fat—it just gets stored in your fat cells, which leads to mitochondrial malfunction.

Not even fatty fruits like avocado or coconut have this effect, because your body treats them as either a fat or a carb—not both. Sugar is the only food that functions as both a fat and a carb simultaneously, and it is this combination of fat and carb that causes metabolic derangements and, subsequently, disease. So, please, don’t be fooled: when it comes to sugar, the claim you hear on TV, that “sugar is sugar” no matter what form it’s in, is a misstatement that can, quite literally, kill you—albeit slowly.

Just A Vegan And Her Meatballs

OMG, I am so excited for all the stuff going on right now! Dan and I are literally busting our butts (in a good way) to bring some great stuff to the table…

And while these will look awesome on your table:

That’s not quite what I meant.

For my Birthday you might recall that my present was a new camera! I am super excited but it’s on back order until June (insert sad face)… and while it’s going to be an awesome camera to have in my purse for on the go pictures, we’ve always wanted a SLR camera for blogging, Art of Weight Lifting images, cookies, and video making.

And today we got one!! Dan got the Canon Rebel T3i… I don’t know what that really means but I’m really excited none the less.

I can’t wait to see all the things we can do with it, but since the instruction manual is the size of a novel, it’s going to take some time to see just everything this bad boy can do!

But one thing I know, is that it will help me show you, my amazing readers, just what’s going on in my “revolutionary” lifestyle (okay, a little hokey, but you get the idea)!

We played around with it at dinner time, and here’s what came out!

Is your mouth watering yet? These “meatballs” aren’t meatballs at all… so don’t worry I am still vegan!

In fact, it was really funny when Dan walked into the kitchen, looked down at the skillet and asked if he was having meatballs, what was I having! I just smirked and let the dinner speak for itself!

I let Dan dig into first, always searching for some food criticism, I was thrilled when he looked up and said they were really good.. score!

This recipe was SOOO easy!

VEGAN MEATLESS MEATBALLS

Ingredients:
  • 1 can black eyed-peas, drained
  • 6 oz of tempeh (I used organic, with wild rice)
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 2 garlic cloves, diced
  • 1/4 cup bell pepper, diced
  • 1 cup onion, sliced
  • 1 tbsp dijon mustard
  • 2 tsp basalmic vinegar
  • Jar spaghetti sauce (I used Trader Joe’s Organic)
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Directions:

  1. Steam tempeh for ~10 minute to soften, remove from heat and allow to cool so you can handle it. Crumble it into small pieces
  2. Mash or process beans until smooth (I stuck them in my blender for ease)
  3. In a large bowl, mix together everything except onions, sauce and oil.
  4. Use your hands, to make golf ball size “meat”balls.
  5. Heat oil in a large skillet on med heat, add onions until heated through.
  6. Add “meat”balls to the pan. Cook ~3 minutes, until browned on bottom, use a wooden spoon to roll them over, cook on all sides.
  7. Lower heat to med-low and pour sauce over the top. Allow to simmer for about 5-10 minutes, moving the pan to shift the “meat”balls around regularly.
  8. Remove from heat and serve!

  • What was the last thing you were really excited about?
  • What’s your favorite side dish for a hearty dinner?

Exercise Is Just As Good as Meds at Preventing Migraines

Migraine Relief

Don’t want to pop a pill? Hit the gym instead. Exercise is just as effective as drugs are when it comes to preventing migraines, according to new research from the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Treatments documented as effective in the prevention of migraines have, until now, included topiramate-based drugs (like the migraine-prevention medication Topamax) and relaxation exercises, but not exercise.

The study, published in the medical journal Cephalalgia, compared the effects of 40 minutes of exercise three days a week to the effects of the already proven migraine-prevention methods: performing relaxation exercises and taking topiramate. The study lasted for three months and follow-ups were completed after three and six months.

The number of migraines decreased in all three groups, with no recorded difference in the preventative effect between the three treatments.

But since exercise packs tons of other health benefits, why not strap on your running shoes?
