The Worst Time to Grocery Shop
You know that buying Chunky Monkey is a bad idea–so how did a pint find its way into your grocery bag? Your hunger could be to blame. You’re more likely to buy high calorie foods if you shop on an empty stomach, according to a new study recently published in Jama Internal Medicine.
Researchers asked 68 people to avoid food for five hours. They then served half of them crackers to eat until they felt satisfied. Finally, all of the participants shopped at an online grocery store. The result: The hungry shoppers chose more high-calorie foods than their just-fed counterparts.
In a follow-up study, researchers tracked people’s food purchases in a brick-and-mortar grocery store at two different times: right after lunch, when they were most likely to be full, and right before dinnertime, when they were likely to be hungry. Interestingly, hunger didn’t significantly affect how many items the shoppers bought—but it did affect the kind of food they purchased. Hungry shoppers filled their carts with more high-calorie foods and fewer lower-calorie foods than the full shoppers.
Previous research suggests that hunger makes your brain find high-calorie grub more appealing. One explanation: When you’re hungry, your body thinks food is scarce, says study co-author Aner Tal, PhD, a post-doctoral research associate at Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab. You’re hard-wired to look for high-calorie foods to make up for this deficiency and prevent it in the future, he says. And while this makes sense for an animal in the wild, it’s not the smartest strategy for humans who have access to so much unhealthy food.
It seems obvious, but the best way to prevent your instincts from taking over your shopping cart is to avoid grocery shopping when you’re hungry and stick to a premade grocery list. If you typically swing by the grocery store on your way home from work before dinner, pack a snack. And if you can’t eat before you shop, push your cart directly to the produce aisle to pick up (and pay for) an apple to take the edge off. Then steer clear of the foods that don’t deserve a place in your pantry.

The company lists its glazed donut alone as having 260 calories and 12 grams of sugar, and it seems unlikely that everything else on the sandwich combined comes in at 100 calories and 1 gram of sugar.
As outrageous as the Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich may be, the scary thing is that it actually seems like a virtuous choice compared to some of the other offerings out there in the restaurant biz. Behold, some of the biggest diet disasters you can have for your morning meal—along with alternatives for when you want to eat breakfast out without doing so much damage.

It may be a myth that eating chocolate causes pimples (thankfully), but new research shows that other things on your grocery list can affect your skin. Diets high in dairy products and high glycemic index foods like white bread, pasta, and cookies may worsen acne, according to a new study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
“Hormones are the main factor thought to increase acne,” says lead study researcher Jennifer Burris, RD, a doctoral candidate in nutrition at NYU Steinhardt. “Milk contains a lot of hormones, and they remain high even after processing.”
Increases in blood sugar and insulin levels are another major culprit behind breakouts—and unfortunately, consuming both dairy and high glycemic index foods can cause spikes.
So while high glycemic index foods and dairy aren’t actually the cause of acne—not everyone who consumes these will see a change in their skin—they can cause flare-ups if you’re already prone to complexion problems.
If you do decide to cut back on the cow juice, make sure to get enough calcium from other sources. “Your daily calcium goal is 1000 milligrams,” says Frances Largeman-Roth, RD, the New York Times best-selling co-author of The CarbLovers Diet. “You can work toward that by incorporating spinach, swiss chard, kale, dried figs, and tofu into your meals.”
Love pasta or rice but hate pimples? You don’t have to give up carbs altogether. Just switch to whole-grain options like brown rice or whole-wheat pasta, or eat something with a lower glycemic index alongside your white carbs. “Pairing beans and vegetables with white pasta or rice will lower the glycemic impact of the meal,” Largeman-Roth says.

The Worst Way to Find a Doctor
When searching for a new doctor, you’re probably hoping for a bedside manner that’s more McDreamy than Dr. House. And while it’s tempting to scour online reviews, they may not lead you to the best choice. It turns out that physician review websites aren’t always reliable, according to a new study from Loyola University Medical Center.
Researchers randomly selected 500 urologists in the United States and examined 10 free physician review websites (like Healthgrades.com or Vitals.com). They found that 79.6% of the doctors were rated on at least one of the sites, with 86% receiving positive ratings and 36% boasting highly positive ratings. Unfortunately, those composite scores were based on an average of just 2.4 ratings! That glowing recommendation doesn’t seem so legitimate coming from less than three people, does it?
“Patients should absolutely be cautious if they’re using this to assess their physicians,” says lead study author Chandy Ellimoottil, M.D., urology resident at Loyola University Medical Center. “They’re based on very few ratings, and you have no idea who put those ratings in.” For instance, you’ll never know if a negative score was from an angry patient or just a competing physician. And even more concerning for patients, those stellar reviews may have been written by the doctor himself. “Until you have hundreds of patients writing reviews, you can’t be sure of the accuracy,” says Ellimoottil.
So leave online review sites for a less serious search—like the best Thai takeout—and stick to traditional methods for finding a great doctor.
Start the search before you’re sick
It may seem like a hassle, but the best time to search for a new doctor is actually when you’re healthy. That way, you can explore your options without settling for the nearest nurse with a prescription pad. “At least for primary care doctors, it’s always a good idea to try a couple and find someone you’re really comfortable with,” says Ellimoottil. “That needs to be worked out before you get sick.”
Hit up friends and family
Word of mouth is always an option, says Ellimoottil. But, as with blind dates, this introduction needs to come from someone you trust. Ask your girlfriends or family members if they know any great physicians in the area. They’re more likely to tell you the truth when it comes to long wait times or a not-so-gentle dentist.
Get a referral for specialists
If you already have a primary care doctor you love, it’s wise to get his recommendation for a specialist, says Ellimoottil. Since they’re likely familiar with your insurance and medical history, they have all the information they need to make an informed suggestion.
Use online tools sparingly
If you absolutely must go online to find a doctor, be smart about it. Pay special attention to the number of ratings that contribute to a doctor’s score. “Somewhere between 50-70 reviews would be a safe point,” says Ellimoottil. And feel free to look there for objective information, like a doctor’s education and board certification. But when it comes to the written reviews, take them with a grain of salt.
Don’t hesitate to get a second opinion
Even though it may feel like you’re cheating on your doctor, you shouldn’t feel bad about scheduling consultations elsewhere if you’re unsure about something. “If you have a diagnosis that requires surgery, I always recommend getting a second opinion,” says Ellimoottil.
Trust your gut
Regardless of the reviews, your physician needs to be someone you can trust. “You have to feel good about your doctor, and you have to know they care about you,” says Ellimoottil. Plus, a positive doctor-patient relationship will ensure that you actually go to your annual check-ups. If the chemistry isn’t right, it may be time to dump your Dr. and find a better fit.

Could This Be the Worst Flu Season EVER?
It’s beginning to look a lot like flu season—about a month too soon. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 48 states and Puerto Rico have already reported cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza and, nationally, the percentage of people testing positive for influenza is rising fast.
This is the earliest start to the flu season in nearly a decade. Last year, it didn’t officially begin until mid February, which, although considerably late, is better than the early start we’re getting this year.
Some health officials worry that the flu’s early arrival may be an omen for a particularly rough flu season ahead. And, in some places, it’s already begun: Various Midwest schools have had to shut down because of the harsh impact of the virus. The Whitehaven News in Memphis, TN, reports that at least three schools in West Tennessee have confirmed they will not re-open until after the weekend, and that a school near Knoxville has also shut down with nearly 200 kids sick at home.
“Increasing flu activity should be a wake-up call,” says Melinda Wharton, M.D., acting director of CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. “For anyone who has put off vaccination: It’s time to get your flu vaccine now.”
The good news is that the flu vaccine is widely available, according to Tom Skinner, senior public affairs officer for the CDC, who spoke at a press briefing last week. “There are already over 120 million doses out there to be had,” he said during the briefing.
While the vaccine is the best tool at preventing the flu, the CDC also recommends following these six steps so you can have a healthy and happy winter.
Avoid close contact
If your loved ones are sick, lay off the smooches until they’re better. It’s also best to avoid close physical contact with many strangers (like, say, in a New York City subway car). That might not be possible for many people, though, so if you must use mass transit, be sure to keep your hands away from your face until you get a chance to wash them well.
Stay home when you are sick
Chances are your coworkers did not ask Santa for a whopping dose of the flu for Christmas, so if you find yourself feeling ill, do everyone a favor and stay at home. Not sure where to draw the line? Check out the 5 times you should definitely call in sick – and the times you can tough it out.
Cover your mouth and nose
Your mom taught you to do this for a reason, and now is not the time to rebel against her advice. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. If you don’t have a tissue on hand, it’s best to cough or sneeze into the crook of your arm, rather than your hand. That prevents the transfer of germs to the next thing you touch.
Wash your hands religiously
Soap, water, and alcohol-based hand rubs are totally in season. Use them as much as possible to protect yourself from germs. To wash your hands the right way, use antibacterial soap, rub your hands together vigorously for 20 seconds, and be sure to scrub up to the wrist, including the back of your hands, between the fingers, and beneath the nails. Then use an elbow to turn off the faucet, and a paper towel or air dryer instead of a reusable cloth.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
The flu doesn’t get into your body through your pores. It makes its way into your body through your eyes, nose, and/or mouth. The most-common way to get the flu: Touching something that is contaminated with germs and then touching your face.
Practice other good health habits
Bottom line: If you act healthy, you’ll be healthy. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

The Worst Way to Get Over a Breakup
Feeling heartbroken? Put down the pen and back away from the diary. Journaling can make it harder to get over a breakup, according to a new study published in Clinical Psychological Science.
In a study of 90 recently divorced or separated men and women, researchers from the University of Arizona asked participants to journal for 20 minutes a day for three consecutive days. Researchers instructed some of them to “really let go and explore your very deepest emotions and thoughts;” others to tell the story of their failed relationship as a narrative with a beginning, middle, and end; and the rest to keep an emotionless log of their daily activities.
Researchers from the University of Arizona divided 90 recently divorced or separated men and women into three groups. They instructed the first group to journal about their feelings for twenty minutes a day for three days straight—“Really let go and explore your very deepest emotions and thoughts,” the researchers said. They asked the second group to write the story of their failed relationship as a narrative with a beginning, middle, and end. And the third group they asked to keep an emotionless log of their daily activities for three days straight. The researchers assessed the participants’ emotional states—including how reflective they were—before the journaling began, and then followed up with the three groups 8 months later. They found that the people who were the most reflective had made the least progress getting over their breakups when they had journaled emotionally for three days. Those who wrote daily logs, however, had made the most progress. People with less ruminative personalities made similar progress despite how they journaled for the three days.
“For people who are ‘very in their head,’ journaling about a breakup can effectively amplify their distress,” says lead author and psychological scientist David Sbarra, Ph.D. “When journaling, they begin brooding on how bad they feel, reflecting on how bad the breakup sucks.” It becomes a bit of an echo chamber. By focusing on daily activities, however, people can better engage in life, determine how they want to spend their time, and find definition outside of the relationship, he says. It forces them to think practically, rather than in impractical what-ifs.

Limit Your Wallowing
Breakups suck, and it’s only natural to feel miserable (even if you don’t take your feelings to pen and paper). The key is to limit the amount of time you let yourself think about the breakup every day, Sbarra says. “Tell yourself, ‘I can think about it for 30 minutes or an hour a day, or I can only think about it when I’m at home. But when I leave home and shut the door, I have to shut the door on those feelings, too,’” he says. Drawing the line (even if you cross it from time to time) will allow you to process your feelings while still making moving on a priority.
Ditch the Reminders
See your ex everywhere you look? Get him out of your head by tossing his toothbrush, pictures, and anything else that reminds you of him, says marriage and family therapist Paul Hokemeyer, Ph.D. Research has also shown that staying connected to an ex on Facebook can stunt your breakup recovery, so drop whatever virtual connections you still have.
Break a Sweat
Fight the urge for quality time with your couch and get at least some physical activity daily, Hokemeyer says. During a breakup, your brain pumps out cortisol, epinephrine, and other stress hormones that can cause headaches, tense muscles, and tummy troubles. Exercise, however, triggers the release of mood-boosting endorphins, relaxes muscles, and eases digestion to help you feel like yourself. Try these yoga exercises to help you get over heartache.
Keep a Gratitude List
“Every day, write down five things for which you are grateful. Use the list to ground yourself when you start to get overwhelmed by anger, fear, or sadness,” Hokemeyer says. Research shows that writing down what you’re thankful for can increase gratitude and feelings of wellbeing.
Give Back
Help others to help yourself. By increasing empathy, which makes you appreciate the good stuff in your own life, volunteering can boost your happiness, he says. Try not to smile when you are getting covered in puppy kisses! Whatever your interests, you can find a way to get your warm and fuzzies on at volunteermatch.org.
Schedule Girls’ Nights
You and your boyfriend might have broken up, but you aren’t alone. Spend time with your friends and ask for support when you are feeling down, he says. Besides helping you reengage in other non-couple activities and boost your self-esteem, research shows the simple act of hanging with friends can up your levels of the feel-good hormone oxytocin.
Compliment Yourself
Write yourself notes with positive affirmations like ‘I am perfect the way I am.’ “The physical act of writing them will enable you to shift your emotional state,” Hokemeyer says. Put them up in your home, office, and car as constant reminders of how great you are—beau or no beau.
Eat for Your Mood
While a pint of ice cream and buttery popcorn can seem like the perfect post-breakup friends, research shows they can actually drag down your mood through the release of stress hormones, according to a 2012 study published in the International Journal of Obesity.
