The Best Music Systems for Swimmers

You may already know that your favorite tunes can motivate you to run faster or stick with the kettlebells longer, but dry land isn’t the only place that your mp3 player can help you step up your fitness game: Listening to music underwater can make you swim faster, according to new research conducted at Brunel University in the United Kingdom.

In a recent study, 26 collegiate swimmers experimented with wearing earbuds during 200-meter trials for three weeks. They listened to motivational music for one week, neutral music for one week, and no music at all for the final week. Listening to both types of music helped the athletes slash their 200-meter times by three seconds. That may not sound like a lot, but in swimming, three seconds can be the difference between first and third place—and the difference would likely be even greater for longer distances. “We found that any song played at 130 beats per minute, mellow or upbeat, motivated the swimmers,” says study co-author Jasmin Hutchinson, assistant professor of exercise science and sport studies at Springfield College in Massachusetts.

Looking to improve your swim time or just have a more efficient workout? You might want to invest in one of these underwater music systems:

Already have a waterproof mp3 player? Then all you need are these Underwater Audio Swimbuds. The extra-short cord minimizes the chance of any tangling, and the around-the-ear style keeps them secure even during flip turns.

If your iPhone is where you store your music, DRYBuds and DRYCase will waterproof your device. Simply place your phone in the plastic case, use the pump to remove any extra air, and secure it to your arm with the neoprene arm band. Plug in the ear buds, and you’ll be rocking out, lap, after lap, after lap.

Pyle’s Waterproof MP3 Player is made of soft, silicon material that wraps around both your head and ears so you don’t have to deal with annoyingly long cords. Upload your music directly to the device, and you can decide whether you want to repeat or skip a track mid-swim with an easy tap of the control system under the right earpiece.
$ 60; pyleaudio.com

For those iPod Shuffle users, the X-1 Interval Swim Solution is your system. Just pop open the waterproof case, insert your Shuffle, and plug it into the inner wire. Then slide your goggle straps into either side of the device, and you’re ready to dive in. The device comes fully equipped with ear buds and multiple bud tips for a personalized fit.
$ 100; x-1.com

Can’t seem to keep ear buds from slipping out of your ears? Try the FINIS Neptune. You can upload your favorite playlists directly onto it, then connect the mp3 player to your goggles and adjust the bone conduction speakers so they rest in front of your ears (on your temples). Hit the play button, and the speakers will vibrate the jaw bone, sending pulses into your inner ear canal.

6 Crazy Ways Music Improves Your Life

’Tis the season of endless holiday music. (Go count how many times you hear “Jingle Bell Rock” on your morning commute.) But don’t shut off those festive tunes—belt ‘em out. Singing could be good for your health, according to a new study from Norway.

Researchers found that hospital employees who took part in a choir program reported both improved health and greater engagement at work. Why? Social bonds formed during cultural activities (like singing) have a positive effect on your perceived well being and general health, says study author Jonas Vaag, a clinical psychologist at Nord-Trøndelag Health Trust in Norway. Singing also triggers the release of endorphins, which boost your feelings of happiness and pleasure, finds a recent UK study.

Here are five more cool ways music can improve your life.

1. Rap Makes You More Creative
Make like Eminem in 8 Mile and start a freestyle rap battle. Spontaneous lyrical improvisation engages your brain’s prefrontal cortex region, which is responsible for creative thought, finds a new National Institutes of Health study. With those parts of your brain fired up, you’re more likely to experience new insights or bursts of creativity, the study suggests. Why does it work? Letting yourself “spitball”—or throw up ideas without pausing to make judgments—can fuel your creative mind.

2. Classical Music Helps You Focus
Rock out with your Bach out. Brain scans conducted by Stanford University researchers show classical music— especially complex, continually changing symphonies like those from Baroque composers like Bach and Handel—actually helps your mind focus and sort out information. Cognitive stumble—when your mind expects to hear something, but is surprised by an unanticipated chord or harmony—helps engage and sharpen brain regions responsible for attention and anticipation, the study authors say.

3. Fast Tunes Boost Your Speed
Music helped cyclists bike faster for longer periods and reduced game-day jitters among basketball players, according to two recent studies from Brunel University in the U.K. How? Music appears to rev up your central nervous system for activity while simultaneously helping to distract your mind from discomfort or difficulty, the research suggests. Expert tip: The research showed fast-paced, energetic music was best for physical activity, and inspirational music that builds to a climax is best for game-time prep. 4. Your Favorite Song Really Does Make It All Better
Listening to music that moves you triggers the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter in your brain that also heightens the pleasure you get from sensual experiences like food and sex, finds a study from McGill University. The key to the dopamine release is that the music must give you chills, the study authors explain. So whether it’s the theme to Shawshank Redemption or fun.’s rousing “We Are Young”, throw on your favorite inspirational tune to heighten the mood with your boyfriend—or the taste of a good ol’ cheeseburger. 5. Certain Chords Can Heal You
The dentist office is on to something. Patients who listened to mellow music before, during, and after surgery reported reduced pain and anxiety and required less sedative medication, according to a University of Kentucky study. Here’s why: Music masks harsh sounds and irritating background noise while also engaging the listener emotionally. The result? Distraction from your pain, says study author Lori Gooding, Ph.D., director of music therapy at Kentucky. Chill out with artists like Enya, Jim Brickman, or Burt and Joe Wolff—they’re proven pain reducers, says Gooding. Need some more ideas? Check out music sites newworldmusic.com and serenitymusic.com.

Nature Is Music And Eggplants Are Butts!

Happy Earth Day! I love Earth Day, I mean if anyone is against it than maybe they should just get off the earth, right?

I have so much respect and awe for this amazing planet we live on, and as a biology dork (I was a bio major), it’s incredible to see and learn what this planet is capable of. Though, I don’t think we will ever TRULY know, ya know?

But because it’s Earth Day, I found this really cool video from Burt’s Bees. Check it out and think of what you’ve done lately and what you can do in the future to make your time on this planet better. And when was the last time to thanked mother earth for such a home?

Farmer’s Market Shinanigans

This morning was our normal Saturday Farmer’s Market adventure! I love farmer’s market mornings! Even if it means, I can’t stay in my pj’s until lunch time. We freaking went to town this morning on our freshies.

I’m talking:

  • Pea Shoots
  • Lettuce
  • Tomatos
  • Squash
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Mushrooms
  • Onions
  • Kale
  • Eggplant

Okay, so I have been so excited to share my “butt” of an eggplant with you! I couldn’t bring myself to buy it but you better believe we had to take a photo!

Are Dan and I the only one’s who think this eggplant looks like a butt?

Please tell me we’re not alone! I was “cracking” up… haha, get it?

We bought all of our goodies for a grand total of $ 22!!!

Afterwards, we enjoyed the morning together by just walking around down town and shooting some pictures. It was the furthest I have walked since my knee has been screwed up, but with a new brace on it held up and felt great!

The fresh air was exactly what we needed… along with a coffee!

Have you visited Charleston before?

Here are some shots from our walk!

Of course I had to do some chin-ups! No walk is complete without chin-ups in the park!

Hey Horsey! How’s it goin?
