Work Out for Free This St. Paddy’s Day

Here’s some news that will make you want to do a jig: MySportsClubs locations in New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia are offering free St. Patrick’s Day-themed classes this Sunday, March 17. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., select gyms in each city will hold a series of 30-minute “ShamRock Your Body” classes set to Celtic music. The routines, which are based off of the chain’s CrossFit-inspired UFX classes, will also incorporate movements that are reminiscent of Irish dance steps.

“It’s a really great way to get in a high-intensity workout before you go out and indulge,” says Geri-Nikole Love, a master trainer who helped develop the UXF classes for New York Sports Club. ” With the tools that we use like kettlebells, the TRX suspension system, and Dueling Ropes, you’re constantly using your core and glutes. It’s a total body workout, but it’s also good core training.”

The participating gyms will also be giving away assorted St. Patrick’s Day-themed prizes.

Free Birth Control Lowers Abortion Rates

birth control: IUDNew research from Washington University in St. Louis reveals that women who receive birth control for free are less likely to have an unplanned pregnancy—and also less likely to have abortions—than women in the general population.

The study, published in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, followed more than 9,000 women over five years starting in 2007. Researchers educated the women—ages 14 to 45, many of them poor or uninsured—about different kinds of birth control and gave them their choice of method at no cost.

When given their pick of contraceptive, 75 percent of the women chose implantable options like intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implants inserted under the skin. This is unsurprising, given that past research has shown that long-lasting, reversible implants are the most effective (implants can last up to 10 years; IUDs up to 5).

But outside of this study environment, there’s another factor to consider: Implants are most expensive method of birth control. They can cost between $ 500 to $ 1,000 for the device and insertion.

The availability of birth control at no cost lowered both pregnancy rates in teenage girls and abortion rates among all participants. The birth rate of the study’s teenage participants was six births per 1,000 girls, compared with the national rate of 34 per 1,000 in 2010. There were six abortions a year for every 1,000 women in the project, compared with the national rate of almost 20 in 1,000.

Study author Dr. Jeffrey Peipert told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the project reveals the potential impact of full insurance coverage of contraceptives under the Affordable Care Act.

Under the ACA, women with insurance will soon be able to get birth control without a copay or coinsurance (Learn more about women’s services covered by the ACA here.)

For information about birth control, check out our birth control info here. Not all forms of birth control will be covered under the ACA (like, say, brand-name methods that have generic alternatives), but it’s good to know your options, regardless.

Guest Post: Machines vs. Free Weights: Which you should be focusing on?

Today’s post is given to you from fellow blogger Alyssa. She brings up some great points and I think you’re really going to enjoy the ever continuous battle between machines and free weights for women’s weight training!

  • Quick question though: Before you start, which do you focus most on when working out?

Weight Machines Versus Free Weights: Which Should You Focus On?

This is a dilemma that we often face. The ease of using machines makes you take them as a perfect solution to give shape to your strength building regiment but there are always two sides to a story.

When I began weight training it was important for me to zero in on the perfect combination for myself. My attempts at exploring more about the use of free weights and machines for strength building helped me understand and appreciate the benefits of each mode of training. Making an informed decision to chalk out an appropriate training program can go a long way in giving you the desired results.

The differences between machines and free weights for training
can be explained on different parameters as follows.

1. Efficacy

Free weights help in strength gain quickly as compared to machines. This is because training with free weights uses more muscles. The support that you get while using machines keeps you in your comfort zone but the number of calories burnt and overall effectiveness of your effort remains low unless you give more time to it.

2. Cost

Free weights cost nothing in comparison to the cost of a machine for workout. As you need a separate machine for different sets of muscles, you may well imagine the bill you will have to foot in case you plan to have a home gym with machines for strength training.

3. Need for an instructor

Each machine allows you specific movements and weights are adjustable as per your convenience. As you need not stretch yourself beyond your limits and the usage is fairly simple, the need for an instructor is not felt as much in case of machines. Free weights require you to train under an instructor to understand the suitability of different exercises for you. A beginner needs to be careful while using free weights. The presence of an instructor is a must in such a scenario.

4. Kind of workout

Free weights can be used for a full body workout. You can use them to do different kinds of exercises, using and working out different body muscles in the process. It is not possible in case of a machine as a machine is meant for specific movements that work particular body parts. No single machine can do what free weights can do for you.

5. Suitability of use after injury

Avoid free weights to avoid exerting an injured area and use machines instead. This is because machines are so built that these help you concentrate on one area at a time. Free weights can cause considerable damage if used for post injury rehabilitation.

Considering the benefits of each against the other will give you a fair idea of the appropriate solution for you. Free weights are appropriate for a workout at home in case you have trained with an instructor before. Buying numerous bulky machines for home use is impractical and expensive at the same time but the use of free weights by a novice makes the person prone to injury. Make sure you opt for what is appropriate for you.

It’s no secret that I freaking love what I do! I love leading a healthy life and helping others do the same by being motivating and giving all the tools a person needs to hit their goals!

Which is why I am offering a pretty sweet gift… but first a great story:

Why I Am Super Motivated Tonight!

While I try to be a huge motivator most of the time, sometimes I need some motivation myself. Tonight I was!

Tonight at a bootcamp we did body composition testing, most of the time the ladies step onto the scale and body fat tester with a bit of hesitation. They are always wondering, what’s this week’s success going to be? Or is that pizza I had a few nights ago going to show up?

Anyways, I have a young lady who has been with me for quite a while, she rocks and is always the first one to show up and I honestly don’t think I’ve ever heard her complain… EVER! And that’s something!

After her weigh-in, body fat testing, and measurements were done she proudly looked up at me with a smile and let me know that she has lost over 20 pounds in the past 2 1/2 months. I couldn’t be prouder of her! She did it, she worked her butt of at every workout, kept up with her nutrition journal and the results speak for themselves…

So if you’re reading this (you know who you are), I am very proud of you, your commitment to yourself and your future and I want you to know that you’re an amazing young woman.

Okay, so snaps go out to her… but back to
