Couples vs. Friends with Benefits: Who Has More Sex?

You hear it from your single guy friends all the time: “Having a girlfriend totally kills your sex life!” But according to new research, your bachelor buddies are way off base.

People in traditional relationships not only have more sex than those in “friends with benefits” relationships, but they’re also more satisfied with their sex life and the person they’re shagging, says a recent study in the Journal of Sex Research.

Researchers surveyed 376 people—half in a traditional relationship, the other half in a friends with benefits scenario—about their sex lives: how much sex they had, how exclusive they were with their partners, how satisfied they were, their go-to sex acts, and more. The results: Although those who liked their flings without strings attached had more hookup buddies—an average of 6.37 lifetime partners, compared to 1.9 for the traditional group—people in relationships generally had a better time.

“Clearly there’s no right or wrong when it comes to what type of relationship you want to have,” says study author Justin Lehmiller, Ph.D., a social psychologist at Harvard University. But the results showed that those in committed relationships were happier and more satisfied, he says.

Another possible reason for the happiness boost: more commitment equals more communication. Lehmiller’s data showed that traditional couples were more open with each other when it came to discussing sex, including needs, boundaries, desires, and STI history.

Friends with benefits beat committed folks in one department, though: condom use. But that’s most likely due to sex buddies taking precautions against any unwanted complications, Lehmiller says.

Everything You Need to Know About The New IUD

Want to prevent pregnancy for the next three years? There’s a new contraceptive to consider: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new intrauterine device (IUD) that’s more than 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy, according to statement released last week by the parent company Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

The new hormonal IUD, called Skyla, is the first to hit the U.S. market in over a decade. Compared to Mirena, the other hormonal IUD on the market, this updated option delivers a lower dose of hormones, is slightly smaller, and lasts for up to three years, instead of five. Skyla’s size makes it a better option for women who haven’t had babies and don’t want one now–like college students or newlyweds–according to Laura Corio, M.D., a Manhattan-based gynecologist.

Intrigued? Here’s what you need to know:

HOW SKYLA WORKS
First, your gynecologist inserts a T-shaped IUD through the cervix and into your uterus. (The device itself is no longer or wider than a standard tampon, but yes, insertion can hurt a bit.) While non-hormonal IUDs are made from copper, which acts as a natural spermicide, hormonal IUDs such as Skyla gradually release small doses of the synthetic hormone levonorgestrel—the same stuff in emergency contraceptive pills. Both options thicken your cervical mucus, which creates a hostile environment for embryo implantation and prevents pregnancy, explains Corio. Based on a clinical trial of over 1,400 women, Skyla works well: fewer than 1 in 100 women got pregnant. Still, there’s no IUD that will protect you from sexually transmitted infections or HIV, so it’s smart for women who have one to use a condom during sex with a new partner.

SIDE EFFECTS
The good news: Skyla is over 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy. And in some cases, the hormones from Skyla (and Mirena) can reduce cramps, lighten your flow, and even sometimes stop bleeding altogether. Now for the bad news: security comes with some strings attached. According to Bayer, the most common side effects include vulvovaginitis (vaginal inflammation or infection), pelvic pain, acne or seborrhea (itchy, flaky skin), ovarian cysts, headaches, menstrual cramps, breast pain, increased bleeding, and nausea.

COST
In many cases, an IUD is the most affordable method of long-term birth control, although it does cost the most upfront. Between a medical exam, the actual IUD, insertion, and follow-up visits with your doctor, getting an IUD can set you back between $ 500 to $ 1000, according to PlannedParenthood.org. The good news: It won’t cost you a penny more until you have it removed. (Unlike a tampon, you can’t do this yourself.) And if you leave your IUD in for its full lifespan–that’s three years for Skyla, five for Mirena, and 10 for a non-hormonal IUD–it will totally pay for itself.

HOW TO GET IT
According to Bayer, Skyla will be available by prescription the week of February 11—which leaves you plenty of time to do your research and talk to your doc about whether it’s right for you. And if you get an IUD, then decide to have a baby? You can go to your OBGYN to get it removed any time, and get pregnant as soon as it’s out.

How to Win an eBay Auction

eBay auctions: proof that shopping is a sport.  Okay, so that might be kind of a stretch, but it turns out that auctions can thrill and excite you, according to a new study in the International Journal of Electronic Commerce. Plus, the competition can be pretty fierce.

As exhilarating as bidding on—and actually winning—an auction may be, missing out on a coveted item can be a huge bummer. In fact, the study shows you have a stronger reaction when you lose an auction than when you win.  So the next time you sit down in front of your computer, hoping to beat out your competition for a much-desired item, use these tricks from Terry Gehrke, certified eBay business consultant and founder of MyAuctionExpert.com.

Glue yourself to your computer
“The number one way to ensure winning an auction is to monitor it carefully,” says Gehrke. “Be on the site, know when the auction ends, and have your finger posed over the refresh button.” The “serious” bidders come out during the last minute, or even the last 30 seconds, he says. At that point, they’ll put in a max bid, and your earlier bid might be out of running.

Consider using sniping software
While it’s frowned upon by many eBay users, using sniping software will give you an added, almost-foolproof advantage over the other bidders—and is completely legal, according to Gehrke. “It holds off submitting a bid so that it doesn’t raise the price up and won’t show you as a potential watcher or potential bidder,” he says. “Then it submits your bid during the last 5 seconds of the auction. No one will beat it just by hitting refresh on their computer.” Just know that it won’t score you etiquette points on eBay, but as Gherke says, “All’s fair in love, war, and buying on eBay.” Gehrke recommends Myibidder.com. “It’s inexpensive and it’s a $ 15 one-time fee and you own it.”

Put in a max bid
“Put a big maximum on the auction to drive away people who don’t want it as badly,” says Gehrke. A max bid—the highest amount you’re willing to pay for a certain item—can deter the competition. When you put in a max bid, eBay will bid only as much as it has to to make sure that you remain the high bidder. But be sure that you’re 100% willing to pay the amount of your max bid (should you win). If you win the auction, you’re obligated to fulfill the bid, according to Gehrke. If you don’t, eBay can actually take your buying privileges away, he says. Also, know that this isn’t a foolproof plan: If someone outbids your max bid amount, you’re out of luck if you don’t catch it in time to outbid them.

Choose your auctions wisely
Gehrke looks for items that are misspelled. “Instead of thousands of people finding it,  maybe one or two people will find it,” he says. “Your chances of winning the item are greater.” Another of Gehrke’s strategies: Look to see how many people are bidding on a particular item. The more bidders there are, the more competition you have, and the higher risk you run of losing the auction. Your plan: Check to see if there are multiple listings of the same item, and choose to bid on the one with the least amount of bidders.

Should You Try the Paleo Diet?

2013 is the year of the caveman diet—at least so far. During the first week of January, “Paleo diet” was the most searched-for diet on the web, according to Experian Marketing Services data.

Typically, searches for diets peak at the beginning of the year (think: resolution time) and predict what diets will be popular through the year, according to Experian Marketing Services. “People are looking for answers to lose weight and manage their health, and people tend to gravitate toward the Paleo diet because a lot of it intuitively makes sense,” says Cynthia Wu, RD, Ph.D., outpatient dietician at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

The Paleo (short for Paleolithic) diet is simple: Eat a strict hunter-gatherer diet of meat, fish, fruits, and vegetables. That means grains, dairy, legumes, salt, processed foods, and refined sugars are off the menu. Proponents of the diet maintain that obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are consequences of a modernized diet, and returning to pre-civilization eating habits will prevent their occurrence.

But even if a fat caveman is impossible to find, is the diet right for 2013? Here, we weigh the pros and cons of the Paleo diet:

PALEO DIET PROS

It Eliminates Processed Foods Processed foods, which are outlawed on the Paleo diet, are high in refined sugars. Stripped of their vitamins and minerals and reduced to quickly digested calories, refined sugars can increase your risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and depression. Meanwhile, about 75 percent of the average American’s sodium intake (which is almost twice what it should be!) comes from commercially prepared foods, contributing to high blood pressure, heart disease, stomach cancer, weak bones, and water retention, according to the Harvard School of Public Health.

It Increases Lean Protein High-protein diets minimize post-meal sugar spikes, reduce fat storage, improve appetite control, and help maintain lean muscle, says Wu. A diet in which about a quarter of the calories come from lean protein sources reduces blood pressure, LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, and triglycerides better than traditional diets, according to research from Johns Hopkins University.

It Promotes Fruits and Vegetables While fruits and vegetables contain simple sugars, they also contain micronutrients and appetite- and blood sugar-stabilizing fiber. A diet rich in produce can reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, Wu says. And a recent study from the University of Warwick and Dartmouth College found that happiness and mental health are highest among people who eat seven portions of fruits and veggies a day.

PALEO DIET CONS

It Cuts Out Healthy Food Groups Research shows that the nutrients in legumes, whole grains, and dairy—all of which are taboo on the diet—can help to lower the risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease, reduce blood pressure, and promote a healthy weight, Wu says. Cutting dairy, the primary source of calcium and vitamin D in modern diets, is especially troubling to women who want to keep their bones strong for decades to come, she says.

It Includes Too Much Meat While not only impossible for vegetarians, the diet requires more animal protein than Wu advises her patients consume. Fresh fish and meat from grass-fed cows, chickens, and pigs are lean, but as they can be difficult to find and afford, so many Paleo dieters end up eating less-than-lean meats, she says. In one study, researchers from the Imperial College London found that an extra 250 grams of meat a day (about equal to a small steak) leads to an additional weight gain of 5 pounds over five years, even without adding calories.

It’s Very Difficult If you haven’t guessed by now, eating only meats and produce requires a lot of planning, prep-time, and dedication. “The diet isn’t sustainable over the long term, and can result in intense cravings,” Wu says. What’s more, as it allows for only fresh meats and produce—both of which tend to be expensive—the diet can get costly very quickly.

THE BOTTOM LINE

While the Paleo diet has a lot of nutritional benefits, it falls short on do-ability and—if you aren’t a supplement connoisseur—on nutrients. Instead of subscribing to an all-or-nothing Paleo approach, Wu suggests taking the diet as a starting point, swapping out Flintstones-worthy slabs of meat for healthy, nutrient-rich (but Paleo-banned) foods, such as whole grains, dairy, and legumes. And since milk, cheese, yogurt, beans, and lentils are excellent sources of protein, you can get the benefit of a protein-packed diet without all of the meat.

How Twitter Can Help You Lose Weight

Did you wake up early for your new spin class? Tweet about it! A new study from the University of South Carolina shows using Twitter as a support network can help people shed extra pounds.

Researchers looked at 96 obese men and women over a period of six months. In the main trial, they were divided into two groups: those who received informational podcasts about weight loss, and those who received the podcasts plus mobile apps for Twitter and tracking their nutrition and exercise along with other group members. After six months, both groups saw a 2.7 percent reduction in weight. However, when researchers looked specifically within the mobile group to examine how Twitter may have helped participants battle the bulge, they saw that every 10 posts to the social-media site resulted in a -0.5 percent weight loss.

Or, to put it simply: “Those who were engaged with Twitter lost more weight,” says lead researcher Brie Turner-McGrievy, Ph.D. Which makes sense, if you think about it from a social perspective. A group-based approach to weight loss can be helpful—the group provides a support network, and also helps keep everyone a bit more honest and motivated. “We were interested in finding a way to provide that group social support online during our intervention,” Turner-McGrievy says. “We chose Twitter because we wanted people to feel free to post multiple, brief messages each day, and have the choice to be anonymous.”

You can try using an online social network to keep you accountable for your health goals, too—no need to be a social media guru. Turner-McGrievy suggests the following:

Pinpoint Bloggers
Look up others tracking their own fitness journeys, and follow along. “I suggest first to search for weight loss bloggers online who also have a Twitter account,” says Turner-McGrievy. “Start by following them and then see who their users are. Follow the users you find who are similar to you.”

Interact
Don’t just watch others talk health; dive in. “Start tweeting!” Turner-McGrievy says. “Twitter is an amazing way to connect with other people who are also attempting to start an exercise, healthy-eating and weight-loss program.” Interaction is key. You want to feel like you’re in it together with other users, not like you’re alone on an island.

Update Your Status
No need to worry about making tweets witty or particularly newsworthy, Turner-McGrievy insists. “The posts to Twitter were mostly in the form of status updates, so just telling people that you went to the gym or stuck to your calorie goals for the day was helpful,” she says. “The nice thing about Twitter is it’s expected that you will post multiple times per day, and you can be fairly anonymous… Our study participants liked having the ability to be anonymous and not have to worry about a friend knowing they were trying to lose weight.”

Try Facebook
While Twitter’s anonymity is certainly great if you want it, Facebook may also work, especially if you can join a weight-loss group or have real-life friends getting fit along with you. “In a current weight loss trial we are conducting among women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, we are using private Facebook groups and have had good success with those,” Turner-McGrievy says.

ALERT: You May Be OD’ing on Sleep Meds

Scary news: Even if you take your sleeping pills as directed, you might be overdosing. Just last week, the FDA released revised guidelines about the recommended dosage of certain popular sleep meds. They now say that women’s doses should be cut in HALF. The change follows research that found that larger doses of a drug that contains zolpidem (like Ambien, Edluar, and Zolpimist) can seriously impair next-morning alertness, even after a full night of rest.

In the study, 500 people took the old recommended dose (10 mg) of a zolpidem-containing sleeping pill, and slept for eight hours. When they woke up, 15 percent of the women had enough of the drug left in their blood to impair their driving. Those who took an extended-release zolpidem pill faired even worse: 33 percent of women woke up with zolpidem levels that were higher than ideal. In both cases, fewer men had high blood levels of the drug in the a.m.

Even if you feel well rested the morning after a zolpidem-induced slumber, your behavior may still be impaired, says FDA spokesperson Sandy Walsh. That’s bad news for the 5,670,000 women who were prescribed zolpidem-containing meds in 2011, according to the latest data from the FDA. After all, the new findings join many known side effects of sleeping pills, such as drowsiness, dizziness, diarrhea, and “drugged feelings”.

The new recommended dose for immediate-release sleep aids is 5 mg, while a safe dose of an extended-release pill has been reduced to 6.25 mg. But to keep a clear mind on the job and behind the wheel–and still get the rest you need–ask your doctor to reassess your dosage before you adjust it on your own. In the meantime, never mix sleeping pills with alcohol or other drugs that make you sleepy, which could exacerbate the side effects.

How Long Should a Cough Last?

Has your annoying cough been dragging on for weeks? It’s annoying for sure, but it’s also totally normal. People tend to underestimate how long a cough should last, according to a new study published in the Annals of Family Medicine. Skewed expectations may be one reason why antibiotics are over-prescribed, even for viral infections.

In a phone survey, researchers asked 493 people how long they thought a case of ACI (acute cough illness, a.k.a. a cold that causes coughing) should last. At the same time, they looked at the existing medical literature to see how long ACI actually lasts on average. Survey respondents guessed that a cough should last 7-9 days. The literature, by contrast, showed that the mean duration of a cough is almost 18 days.

18 days of hacking sounds like a long time, which helps explain why many people would be tempted to see a doctor much sooner than that. Doctors may feel pressured to prescribe antibiotics, even when it’s unnecessary or (in the case of a viral infection) useless.

There’s a reason we get anxious about a lingering cough, says lead study author Mark H. Ebell, MD, MS, an associate professor at the University of Georgia. “There are a lot of infections like the common cold … that last maybe a week to 10 days,” he says. “I think people extend that to bronchitis or a chest cold and think it should last that long as well.” Some coughs hang around for longer, and as inconvenient as they can be, we need to allow ourselves enough time to recover. “Americans are not known for being the most patient people in the world,” Ebell adds.

Knowing the actual timeline can keep you from getting freaked out for no reason. Still, there are signs to watch out for, says Meir Kryger, MD, a professor of pulmonary medicine at the Yale School of Medicine. Watch to see if your cough has a creepy partner in crime, like funky-looking or excessive phlegm. “If you’re coughing and you’re bringing up something, it’s usually something you should go to the doctor for,” says Kryger. Also watch for changes in the color of your phlegm or traces of blood, both of which merit a trip to the doc.

If your cough is accompanied by shortness of breath or a wheezing noise in your chest, it’s also smart to get checked out. A barking or whooping sound, accompanied by a coughing spasm, could be a sign of adult whooping cough, which Kryger says is on the rise. In addition, some coughs can be caused or aggravated by certain medications, like those used to treat high blood pressure.

While you may not be breathing easy in just one or two weeks’ time, see a doc if you have any of the above symptoms. “It’s better to be safe than sorry,” says Kryger.

Is the Flu Shot Safe For Pregnant Women?

Good news for flu-fearing moms-to-be: a massive new study confirms that the flu shot is perfectly safe for pregnant women, and could even reduce the risk of miscarriage and other complications.

Researchers at the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) reviewed the medical records of 113,331 women pregnant in Norway during the 2009-2010 flu pandemic. While 2,794 expectant mothers were diagnosed with influenza, those who got the flu vaccination were about 70 percent less likely to get sick. However, women who contracted the flu while they were pregnant were more almost twice as likely to lose their babies before birth.

While there’s no firm proof that the flu directly causes a woman to miscarry or deliver a stillborn baby, the virus does appear to have a harmful effect on the fetus, according to Allen Wilcox, M.D., head the Reproductive Epidemiology Group at The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and study co-author.

That said, faulty research and hype about vaccine safety has made some pregnant women skeptical about protecting themselves from the flu. “There is no evidence of harm from the vaccine, and plenty of evidence of benefit,” says Wilcox. No wonder the World Health Organization has recommended it for years.

The Danger in Googling Your Symptoms

Do you visit Dr. Google more than you do your MD? You’re not alone. In the past year, about 35 percent of Americans have gone online to diagnose themselves or others, according to a new survey from The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project.

While 41 percent of survey respondents said that a medical professional confirmed their self-diagnoses, more than one in three never followed up with a clinician for a second opinion. And another 18 percent learned their self-diagnoses were wrong after visiting a professional, according to the survey of more than 3,000 U.S. adults. While study authors say the purpose of the survey was to determine who looks for health information online, medical experts are concerned what the findings mean for patients’ mental health.

“Every person is about four websites away from deciding they have cancer and are going to die,” says Rahul K. Khare, MD, an emergency medicine physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. “There is just so much bad information on the Internet.”

While searching to see if your sniffles match the symptoms of the cold or of the flu, wandering the web can fuel a sort of Internet-enabled hypochondria, dubbed “cyberchondria.” Unfounded anxieties over common health symptoms are becoming increasingly common as more people visit the Internet instead of the doctor, says Khare, who has treated patients who—after experiencing common symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, and enlarged lymph nodes—Google their symptoms and convince themselves they have cancer. One patient even reached a self-diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, he says.

Search Trusted Websites
Any quack with an Internet connection can build a website. Make sure the sites you visit for health advice are reputable and vetted by medical experts. Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, and The Centers for Disease control and Prevention all have legit and easy-to-find information for self-diagnosers, he says.

Don’t Peruse for Pleasure
Sure, medical pages about obscure fungal infections can feed a sort of morbid curiosity, but when it comes to self-diagnosing, keep your searches targeted and don’t wander, Khare says. Only research the symptoms that you actually have and log off as soon as you find your answer.

Double Check Your Diagnosis
“The last thing people should do is worry for no reason,” Khare says. If online information has you nervous, visit your doc immediately. Share the diagnosis you found online and don’t leave until your concerns are addressed, he advises.

What Your Doctor Isn’t Telling You

Everyone is human—including your doctor. Unfortunately, that means that even the men and women in white coats make mistakes sometimes. But here’s the scary thing: A new study from Johns Hopkins University shows patients are rarely informed about medication errors. In addition, while men and women in Intensive Care Units (ICU) are most likely to experience harmful mistakes, they’re the least likely to be told about them.

Researchers looked at a database of more than a million medication errors from 1999 to 2005, voluntarily disclosed from 537 hospitals. Prevalent mistakes mostly involved omissions, like failing to administer medication to a patient. The most costly errors had to do with incorrectly dosing a patient and problems with IV lines. About 6.6 percent of the errors occurred in ICU, while the rest happened in non-ICU areas of hospitals. While blunders didn’t hurt the patient 98 percent of the time, the rate of harmful errors doubled in the fragile Intensive Care Unit.

Worst still, hospitals only took action half the time just after a mistake, and only let families in on the error in 2 percent of cases. “What surprised us most was what we do about [errors] regardless of where they happen, at least in the immediate time around when they occur,” says lead researcher Asad Latif, M.D., assistant professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins. “We need to really look into what the consequences of medication errors is in our hospitals.”

While Latif acknowledges that hospitals may have taken corrective action after the error was reported to the database studied, the resolutions need to happen faster. “Many of the actions we looked at, such as informing the involved staff and the patients and their caregivers, would best be taken in the immediate aftermath of any mistake, when it is still fresh,” he says.

You can play a role in making sure you get the necessary updates regarding mistakes, and also prevent them before they happen. Latif suggests the following:

Do a Double-Check
Before you take new meds in a hospital setting, ask your doc the specifics of what you’re getting. The study revealed most mistakes happen during the administration phase, so asking will both inform you and remind your doctor to look twice at what he’s doling out. “This can act as a final double-check,” Latif says.

Ask After a Change
Any environmental changes — you move floors, find yourself dealing with a new doctor or start a new medication — should prompt you to ask medication questions again. For instance, ask the doc what dose you should be getting, and for how long, Latif advises.

Write Down Home Meds
Even if you’re not hospitalized and don’t plan to be, continuously keep track of all pills you’re taking to keep physicians accurately updated in an emergency. “Keep home medications written down, along with their dose and timings, to guarantee that hospitals get them right if they are admitted,” Latif says.

Don’t Become Paranoid
While fear of being kept in the dark is scary, do realize that medication errors are few and far between, and even fewer result in harm to the patient. Latif says not to become alarmed if your doc informs you of a mistake, but you should “inquire about the nature of the error, and what was done as a result of it.” Keep notes to help you to remember exactly what happened, in case you need to ask further questions about it later.
