7 Secrets for an Amazing First Date

Okay, so nailing a date isn’t exactly quantum physics…but sometimes it seems like it might as well be, considering the time and effort scientists (and most single people for that matter) spend pondering the topic. In the latest study, Stanford University researchers analyzed nearly 1000 four-minute speed-dating pair-ups to figure out what factors determined whether couples felt a spark—or had a “meh” attitude toward each other. They recorded the conversations, asked participants to fill out a questionnaire about what they thought of each date, and then poured through mounds of data. What they discovered will fascinate you.

Here’s what researchers noted about women based on the speed dates:

You’re usually pickier than he is
One finding you’ll love: The power is (mostly) in your hands. “Women are much more selective than men when it comes to dating,” says study author Dan McFarland, PhD, a sociologist at Stanford. Ladies indicated a willingness to go on a second date with much less frequency than guys did. So you can relax knowing it’s more about you deciding whether you want to see him again than the other way around.

You might want to act a little self-centered
On that note, couples hit it off when women talked about themselves and men supported this by talking about the women. So don’t stress about whether you’re hijacking the convo too much. “Conversations went better if women used words like I and me a lot and men said you more often,” says McFarland.

When you mix up your tone, he thinks you’re into him
Speaking quickly and varying your pitch correlated with romantic interest. “It signals excitement,” says McFarland. A slow, monotone voice was associated with a sense of distance and awkwardness. Something to keep in mind, depending on the vibe you want to give off.

Questions are the kiss of death
This one is pretty baffling: You’d think asking a guy about himself would show you’re interested and enthusiastic, right? Well, it turns out the more questions couples posed during a date, the less connected they felt. According to McFarland, a factual Q&A about where you’re from or what your hobbies are made people feel detached, like they were trying to fill the gaps and forcing it, instead of letting the chat flow naturally.

Choose your words carefully
Fluffy fillers—sorta, kinda, probably, I guess—are turn-offs because they indicate a lack of passion. On the other hand, sprinkling in y’know and I mean when telling a story (linguists call these phrases “self-markers,” because they bring attention to yourself) draws your date into what you’re saying and helps you both get more in tune.

And a few notes from researchers that you might want to keep in mind about him:

It’s a good sign if he interrupts
Surprisingly, women were more into guys who jumped in mid-story—not to bring the conversation back to themselves, but to complete her sentence or agree with her. “It makes you feel like you have chemistry because you’re jointly telling the story together, you’re both engaged, ” says McFarland. It’s his way of trying to build a rapport, and it proves he’s genuinely listening to and interested in you.

You’ll click more with an empathetic guy
When you’re telling him about yourself, pay attention to his reactions. The research showed that men who chimed in with supportive statements about something positive in a woman’s life (“That’s really cool,” “That’s awesome!” “Amazing!”), and sympathy about a tough situation (“Oh no,” “That’s weird,” “That sucks”) scored more love from the ladies. And rightfully so—empathy is one of the ways he shows he’d be up for another date.

5 Amazing Things Your Brain Can Do

You know your mind is great at solving complex problems and daydreaming about Ryan Gosling, but it can do a lot more than that. Your brain can actually control everything from your sex life to your weight. But there’s a catch: If you’re not taking care of it, your brain can throw all these areas out of whack. Here, how to maximize your mind to reap big benefits in all areas of your life:

Switch Off Stress and Anxiety
Here’s the good news: Women’s brains are significantly more active than men’s brains, especially in the prefrontal cortex—the area involved in judgment, impulse control, planning, empathy, and more—says Daniel Amen, M.D., author of the new book Unleash the Power of the Female Brain. But a super-active prefrontal cortex comes with its own set of challenges. “Because of that increased activity, women also worry more and have trouble letting go of things,” Amen says. His advice: Give your brain a break with regular stress-management techniques—like meditation, guided imagery, or even a massage. “Just ten minutes a day to take your brain somewhere else will decrease cortisol production,” says Amen. And cutting that stress hormone will make you happier, wiser, and more productive.

Control Your Sugar Cravings
That irresistible urge to devour an entire bag of chips isn’t coming from your stomach—it’s coming from your noggin. Those cravings kick in when your brain is being deprived. Low levels of vitamin D, low blood sugar, and not enough sleep are all associated with lower blood flow to the brain, says Amen, which results in bad decisions. Boost your self-control by giving your brain what it wants: eight hours of sleep, healthy snacks throughout the day, and additional supplements as directed by your doctor.

Ease PMS
If you turn into an irrational, carb-obsessed mess before your period, blame it on your brain—not just your hormones. “Progesterone makes you feel relaxed and estrogen helps you think clearly, and both of them drop before your cycle,” says Amen. To counteract this effect, your brain needs a boost of serotonin. Carbohydrates will do the trick (which is why bagels look even more delicious this time of the month), but make sure to quell the craving with healthy options. “A smart carb would be a sweet potato or an apple,” says Amen. Still feeling cranky? Go for a run. Exercising gives you a huge boost of serotonin.

Have Better Sex
Because women’s brains are built to multitask, it can be difficult for you to focus solely on pleasure while having sex. “Where you direct your attention before and during sex will either enhance it or diminish it,” says Amen. So focus it somewhere hot—like your guy’s amazing arms or the sensations you’re feeling. It takes a little training, but the end result is a big O. Bonus: Have your guy give you a foot massage to get you in the mood. “Your feet are right next to your clitoris in the brain,” says Amen, so any activation in that area will boost your arousal even more.

Increase Your Intuition
There’s a reason why women tend to have more gut feelings than men: Female brains are actually better at reading social cues and picking up on subtle differences. But just because your brain notices something—like an awkward glance from a coworker—that doesn’t mean you’ll always interpret it correctly. “It’s important to honor it, but at the same time question it,” says Amen. Plus, your gut is more likely to be wrong if you’re running on too little sleep or food. “There are different ways we tend to distort things, so you want to be good at talking back to your brain,” says Amen. The good news: The more you question your instincts, the better you’ll get at interpreting your gut.

DIY: 5 Ways to Give Yourself an AMAZING Massage

Between talking, texting, typing, and cross-training, life can really take a toll on your body. It’s no wonder that prescription pain medication sales have jumped 90 percent since 1997, according to an Associated Press investigation. That’s a lot of pills, especially when massage can be just as effective in some cases, and almost free. Whether it’s your head, shoulders, knees, or feet that need attention, there’s an easy massage you can give yourself, no expensive meds required.

Trouble Spot: Your hands
The Solution: A wrist workout
Sitting at a desk all day long can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome, irritation of a nerve in your wrist and fingers, but this series of exercises, ideally done every hour, can prevent pain from creeping into your day.

1. Hold your left hand up, palm facing outward. Using your right hand, pull the fingers back toward your wrist until you feel a stretch, and hold that position for 5 seconds. Repeat the stretch on your right hand.

2. Press the palms of your hands together at chest height. Lower them towards your lap until you feel the stretch in your wrists. Hold for 5 seconds.

3. Spread your fingers wide for 5 seconds.

4. On your left hand, gently pull the thumb back toward your wrist until you feel the stretch. Hold it for 5 seconds, and then repeat the move on your right hand.

5. Curl your fingers into a fist: Start with your pinky finger, and gradually fold the remaining four fingers into a fist. Then curl your wrists inward until you feel the stretch, and hold it for 5 seconds.

6. Massage the inside and outside of each hand, and then gently shake them out.

Trouble Spot: Your feet
The Solution: A tennis ball and frozen water bottle
Whether you have a job that requires you to be on your feet all day or you’re a devoted runner, lots of factors can play into foot pain. The key to keeping it at bay is to massage and ice those feet after a hard day (or a long run). Massage your feet with the tennis ball: Place it under one heel, and then stand and sink your body weight onto the ball. Slowly roll the ball from the heel to the base of the toes, spreading your toes wide when the ball passes near. Repeat on the opposite foot. A soup can or a golf ball can also stand in if you don’t have a tennis ball handy. Use the water bottle to ice your feet down afterward, rolling it back and forth under each foot.

Trouble Spot: Your shoulders or back
The Solution: Another tennis ball
This basic massage move will help anyone who sits hunched in front of a computer screen all day or suffers from any form of back pain. Lay on the floor with a tennis ball placed near the area that hurts most, such as your lower back or the spot between your shoulder blades. Roll the tennis ball around until you hit the spot that’s most tender, and lie there for 1 to 5 minutes, or until you feel your muscles relax.

Trouble Spot: Your knees
The Solution: A foam roller
Made from hard foam, these rollers will run you anywhere from $ 11 to $ 19 at most sporting goods stores, but you can also just go to your local hardware store and buy a piece of PVC pipe to pick up a discounted version. When you place a foam roller or the pipe underneath your muscles, the pressure gives your muscles a much deeper massage than you’ll get from simply rubbing them.

How does that help your knees? Foam rollers help massage muscles that, when tight, can lead to knee pain. One is your iliotibial band, commonly called the IT band, which is a tough strip of connective tissue that runs down the outside of your thigh, starting on your hip bone and connecting just below your knee, writes Jordan D. Metzl, MD, in the Men’s Health Athletes Book of Home Remedies. When it gets tight, it can lead to knee pain.

To fix that, lie on your right side and place your right hip on your roller. Put your hands on the floor for support. Cross your left leg over your right and place your left foot flat on the floor. Roll your body to your right, allowing the roller to move from your hip to your knee as it massages the entire length of your outer thigh. Then roll back and forth for 30 seconds. Switch to your left side and repeat with the roller under your left hip.

Whenever you get to a sore spot, stop. Applying extra pressure to sore areas will help release tension.

Trouble Spot: Your whole body
The Solution: Cool gadgets
If you have a lot of spots that get creaky or sore, it might be worth investing in some tools that will target certain areas (or doing lots more foam rolling; check out these whole-body foam roller exercises from Prevention). Here are two of our favorites.

Spoonk Mat: The mat uses acupressure (a form of massage based on traditional Chinese medicine) to relax your muscles. When you lie or stand on the mat, the plastic stimulation points apply pressure to nerve endings, which increases blood flow and the release of endorphins that, in turn, reduce levels of stress hormones in your body. You can stand on it, lie on it, or roll it up and place it behind your neck or lower back to ease tension in any of those areas. $ 79; spoonkspace.com

PTFit Multi-Roller: A few rolls with this thing and you might understand why dogs shake their legs when you scratch their bellies. It just feels so good! The solid-wood massager is shaped like a hook with rollers on the tip and along the handle so you can target small spots, such as your neck, or larger muscle groups like your calf or quadriceps muscles (the manufacturer’s site has lots of how-to videos to show you how to use it). It functions much like a foam roller, placing pressure on tight muscles to massage them and cut down on pain. Unhinged, it gets at those hard-to-reach sore muscles between your shoulder blades, and hinged (as in the picture), you can use it on your legs and lower back. It beats foam rollers, though, for people who aren’t nimble enough to lie down on a roller on the floor and for office-bound workers with stiff muscles—you can use the device while sitting in your chair. $ 54.95; ptfitusa.com

2 Amazing Energy Boosting, Fiber Filled, Protein Packed Breakfasts

I will start off from the beginning letting you know that neither of these are vegan meals. In fact, these aren’t my breakfasts, they are Dan’s.

Dan might not be great at cooking dinner, but he is a master breakfast maker! We used to have pancake contest of who could make the best looking and best tasting pancake, but I hated losing so we’ve stopped. :(

Plus these take less than 10 minutes to make, so there is no excuse!

Why Breakfast, Above All Else?

Breakfast is by far my favorite meal of the day, I go to bed craving breakfast! Dan and I are the same in that we both wake up, go to the bathroom (not together) and then straight into the kitchen within 10 minutes of waking up for breakfast.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, which is why I don’t understand why only 53% of people eat it!? If you don’t eat breakfast, please let me know why?

Lets not forget that during the night your body is still working hard, even though you’re sleeping. It keeps fuel to work that hard! You know that you shouldn’t go too long without food during the day, so why would people want to go from their last meal at night until lunch without any food?

Your body is literally starving!

Other benefits of breakfast:

  • Starts up metabolism (studies show that people who eat breakfast have an easier time losing weight and are more likely to keep it off).
  • Helps concentration (a study performed on kids showed that kids who had a balanced breakfast performed better on standardized test compared to no breakfast or sugar-filled breakfasts)
  • Improved endurance
  • Stabilizing blood sugar
  • Decreases cravings

Dan’s Mighty Breakfasts: 2 Meal Options To Start Your Day Off Right

Both of these are filled with healthy carbs and a great dose of protein and fat. All three coming together to give you a long lasting energy boost. No machine snacks for you today!

Plus they take less than 10 minutes to prepare… winner!

Hot-n-Hot Egg Sandwich

HOW TO:
Dan uses 1 whole egg and 1 egg white for this. Wisk it together with whatever spices we have available (normally pepper, basil, rosemary) and pours it into a hot skillet.

Like an omelet he adds in diced veggies (again what ever is in the fridge), folds it in half once the eggs have begun to set, then folds it again for 1/4 triangle.

Place on a toasted Ezekiel bread, add a slice of your favorite cheese and top with the BEST sauce ever… Scotch Bonnet.

Super Vegetable Fluffy Oatmeal

I made this for Dan this past weekend when he told me he was getting a bit tired of his normal breakfast and wanted a change. Unlike me, he’s not a sweet breakfast eater, so I was determined to give him something he would love and something that would be completely new to him!

How To:
You will need two pans for this, one skillet and one small pot. Basically, I took whatever veggies I had in the fridge, diced them up and sauteed them in some coconut oil on med heat until softened. To be specific, this had bell peppers, onion and broccoli in it along with some Boar’s Head turkey meat I chopped up.

In the pot, mix together 1/2 cup of milk (I used Coconut-Almond milk); 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup old fashioned oats. Bring it to a boil, stirring regularly then reduce to a simmer and allow the liquid to get soaked up and the oatmeal to soften. When it’s almost done, 2 egg whites were whisked in along with the veggies. The whisking in of the eggs makes the oatmeal fluffy and creamy!

And that’s what it looked like! It smelt amazing and I wish the new camera could capture the smell for you! But just take my word (and Dan’s) and try it out!

So what are you going to do? Sit around and throw a pity party, or stand up and fight back!

Them are fightin’ words!
